Civil War question to ponder. . . .

Was Lincoln’s election an excuse or a reason for secession?  Did the white southerners have solid grounds for fearing a Republican administration?   Thoughts?  (Democrats controlled both House and Senate and had 5-4 advantage on Supreme Court)
